It is extremely important that high eye pressure be treated as early as possible to prevent loss of vision. Once vision loss occurs, it cannot be restored or corrected. Treatment usually means controlling eye pressure.

Eye drops are one of the most common treatments for high eye pressure and BETIMOL® is an eye medication that is used as an eye drop. The medication in BETIMOL® eyedrops is called timolol hemihydrate, which is a type of drug called a beta blocker. BETIMOL® works by lowering the   pressure inside your eyes by decreasing the production of a clear fluid called aqueous humor.

Beta blockers are also available as oral medications (tablets) which are used to treat high blood pressure. BETIMOL®, a solution that is an eye drop, is a beta-blocker used to lower ocular (eye) high pressure.

BETIMOL® should not be used in people who are allergic to any of its ingredients. For BETIMOL®, this is most likely to be a concern for people who are allergic to the preservative benzalkonium chloride.

In studies of BETIMOL®, the most commonly reported side effects related to the eye were stinging and burning. Other side effects related to the eye that occurred in more than 5% of people were: dry eyes, itching, foreign body sensation, discomfort in the eye, redness in the eye, swollen eyelids, and headache.

BETIMOL® should not be used in patients who have some heart or breathing problems. If you have heart or breathing problems, tell your healthcare professional.

BETIMOL® is available in two different strengths, 0.25% and 0.5%, and is used either once or twice a day, depending on your healthcare professional's recommendation. Always use BETIMOL® as instructed by your healthcare professional.

Important Information
The most commonly reported ocular side effect was stinging and burning.

BETIMOL® is contraindicated in patients with overt heart failure, cardiogenic shock, sinus bradycardia, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block, bronchial asthma or history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or hypersensitivity to any component of this product.
