Book Trade Information
We were deluged with trade books during 2010 & 2011 and as a result are overwhelmed with books to be processed. Yes, you can have too many books! We are being extremely selective in books being traded. We are not taking duplicates of titles we already have for the most part.
If you want to see our Wish List for trades, click on the Trade Wish List Tab.
Westerns, Harlequin & Silhouette (Series), Christian Fiction (Heartsong, etc.), and the thicker Romance (Historical Romance) trade 2 for 1. You bring us two of your books and take 1 of ours, within it’s own category only. Ex. Westerns for Westerns, you can’t trade Westerns for Harlequins, etc. Again, no duplicates accepted if we already have the title in stock.
Generally, Series Romance must be published 2009 or later. There are some exceptions, such as early Nora Roberts, Debbie Macomber, Diana Palmer, etc. that can be older.
Current Book Trade Customers If you have a book trade credit balance at the store, it needs to be under 50.00 balance by June 30, 2012. All trade accounts will be limited to 50.00 limit.
Book Trade Information
Some used bookstores price books at half of the original cover price, we do not. Since many of our sales are online, our books are priced according to researched internet selling prices. We issue trade credit based on those estimated selling prices.
Mass Market Paperbacks (called MMPB) are the smaller paperbacks. We have several trade methods for them.
Generally, Series Romance must be published 2009 or later. There are some exceptions, such as early Nora Roberts, Debbie Macomber, Diana Palmer, etc. that can be older.
Other MMPB (current fiction, fantasy, classics, thrillers, etc.) trade for MMPB only. In other words, you can’t bring in a stack of Dean Koontz MMPB and trade for Softcovers or Hardcovers.
The chart below shows the amount of trade credit you will be offered per book , based on publishing date and our estimated selling price.
Current and prior year $1.25 2009-08 $1.00 2007 and older .75
Softcover and Hardcover may be traded for Softcover and/or Hardcover. They are also priced according to online value. We offer 35% of our selling price as trade credit per book. Examples on chart below:
Our Estimated Price Trade credit
$10.00 $3.50 $8.50 $3.00 $7.50 $2.75 $6.50 $2.25 $5.00 $1.75 $3.50 $1.25
Book club editions
Current year $1.75 per book Prior years $1.25 per book
Nonfiction credit is issued at 35% of our estimated selling price per book.
We have a notebook at the store, and will keep a ledger page for your trading activities.
You do not have to use all your credit at one time, you may keep a balance of up to $50.00. Once it reaches $50.00, you will have to use up some of the trade credit before you bring in more books for trade.
Trade credit does not expire, as long as you have activity at least once a year. After two years of no activity, your trade credit will expire.
If you bring a bag or two in for trade, we can check them out on the spot and give you a trade offer. Rhonda processes them on Thursdays & Sundays up until one hour before closing time. If you have more than we can process on the spot, you can leave them for processing later in that day (or the next day Rhonda is at the store).
Book Trade FAQs
1. What type of books are NOT accepted for trade?
We do not accept books with the following flaws:
*Paperbacks with clipped corners *Loose or torn/ripped pages, missing pages *Damaged or missing cover *Smell strongly of smoke or perfume *Mold or mildew *Books that are brought in boxes containing bugs or rodents/droppings *Broken spines or cracks in binding *Wear/reader creases so excessive that the title cannot be easily read *Heavy underlining, highlighting or writing in the text *Outdated Textbooks (ex. Psychology textbooks from 1980's) *Advance Reading Copies or Uncorrected Proofs *Books that are missing components (such as book missing the DVD or CD that originally came with it) *Ex-library with excessive markings, parts of DJ removed.etc. (minimally marked, not damaged ex-lib's may be ok)
We rarely (but sometimes might, depending on value, scarcity, etc.) take the following:
*Dirty or water-stained books (including steam damaged/rippled pages from being read during tub soaks) *Series romance published prior to 2009 (ex. Harlequins & Silhouettes UNLESS they are collectible authors such as Barbara Cartland, Nora Roberts, etc.) *Hardcovers that were issued with Dust Jackets, but are now missing their Dust Jackets.
2. What other reasons are books not accepted for trade credit?
Other reasons we can't accept your books for trade:
*We are overstocked on that particular title (due to space limits, we can’t have duplicates of most titles). *The title/author is not something that sells for us *The book is not in good enough condition *Outdated nonfiction *Outdated fiction by unknown or lesser known authors
3. Genres & types that we will not accept for trade
*Reader's Digest Condensed Books (but we will take Reader's Digest Published books, such as Reader's Digest Family Songbook) *Videos (DVD or VHS) *Computer games *individual comic books (we DO take graphic novels) *Encyclopedias or almanacs *Most Magazines or catalogs (call or email though to ask, as we will take some such as Mother Earth News, Clean Eating and older Sears Christmas Catalogs) *Porn, though we do take erotica or sex books (Anne Rampling, Sue Johansen, Erica Jong, nonfiction sex books, etc.)
4. Do you take books I got from you back for trade in credit?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
If we need that particular title and it meets condition guidelines, yes. If we have too many copies of the title, it is not in good condition, or it is no longer in demand, then no.
5. If in doubt whether we will take a book, bring it in (unless moldy or insect infested) and we will take a look and see if it can be traded. A good rule of thumb: don’t bring us a book that you wouldn’t want to buy (or most people would not want to buy). Unless you are like Don and would read a book held together with binder clips. But, again, some books are rare and desired in any condition...so if in doubt, bring it!
